AITAH for Telling the Child I Placed for Adoption That I Don’t Regret My Decision? | The Reunion That Broke Both Our Hearts
I’m 39F. At 19 I got pregnant after a short relationship. I was in college, broke, mentally unwell, and knew I couldn’t raise a child. I chose adoption — open adoption — with a wonderful couple who sent letters and photos every year. I named her “Lily.” She’s now 20F.
Last year Lily reached out. We’ve met three times. She’s smart, kind, and looks exactly like me. The first two visits were emotional but positive.
Last week she asked the question she’d been holding in:
“Do you ever regret giving me away? Do you wish you’d kept me?”
I took a deep breath and answered honestly:
“No, Lily. I don’t regret it. I was drowning at 19. I couldn’t have given you the life you deserved. You got two loving parents, stability, opportunities I never could have provided. I’m proud of my decision every day because it gave you the world.”
She went silent, then started sobbing. She said she’d spent years hoping I’d say I wished I’d kept her, that hearing I don’t regret it makes her feel “unwanted all over again.” She left and hasn’t answered my messages since.
Her adoptive mom called me crying, saying I “crushed” Lily and that I should’ve lied and said I regretted it every day to spare her feelings. Some mutual friends (who know the story) say the truth was cruel and that adoptees need to hear their birth moms “wanted” them, even if it’s not realistic.
So Reddit, no sugarcoating:
AITAH for telling my biological daughter, honestly, that I do not regret placing her for adoption because it was the best choice for both of us?
Or should I have lied and told her I’ve regretted it every single day to protect her feelings?
I won’t take the truth back, but I’m devastated she’s hurting.
