Описание: Britain is in the grip of a type 2 diabetes epidemic. It costs us around 1 million pounds an hour in drugs, inpatient, outpatient and social care. It affects approximately 1 in 20 of us, and a frightening 850,000 people have it but don’t know it. In this Food Hospital special, 6 obese women take up residence in the Extreme Diet Ward in a bid to try and rid themselves of Type 2 diabetes. Recent scientific evidence suggests that this disease, which was once thought to be incurable, can now be put into remission through a change in diet and reduction in weight.

Though they’ve never met before, these 6 women will live together under one roof and be monitored 24 hours a day as they embark on the first four days of their potentially lifesaving diets. Dietitian Lucy Jones and GP Gio Miletto have gathered together the latest scientific evidence and devised 2 diets for the women to follow. 3 of the women will be following a 1600 calorie a day ratio controlled food plan, whilst the other three will be on a mainly liquid 800 calorie a day diet. It will be the hardest 4 days of their lives. But these 6 women have been given a lifeline. For some, a simple change in diet is no longer an option. As a nation we’re spending up to 10 billion pounds a year on diabetes – that’s around a tenth of our NHS budget.

Consultant Surgeon Shaw Somers is preparing to perform weight loss surgery on Tracey Fern Sweeney who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes two years ago and now weighs 23 stone. Britain’s diabetes epidemic is now so bad that up to 1 in every 20 pregnant women has the disease. Dr Pixie McKenna is at the maternity unit of the Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth to meet a new mum who was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy. 36 year old Cherry was forced to have an emergency C- section 4 weeks before her due date and baby Kai was whisked straight into intensive care. 8 weeks later, it’s time to reunite the women at the Extreme Diet ward - but how many, if any, have managed to reverse their Type-2 diabetes?
