Before the movement had a name, she had courage.
At 15 years old, Ms. Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She had studied the Constitution — and believed it was meant for her, too.
She was arrested.
Handcuffed.
Silenced.
And still, she stood.
Ms. Colvin became one of the four young women who helped end bus segregation through Browder v. Gayle. She was represented by civil rights attorney Fred Gray, who said she gave the movement “moral courage.”
And in 2021, March On! helped clear her record — officially expunged after more than 60 years.
Today, we say her name.
Today, we honor her truth.
Today, we remember Ms. Claudette Colvin.
