Mohamed Rabte was rowing for Libya when his homeland erupted in revolution. He lost most of his left arm in August 2011 while defending his hometown Zuwarah against Muammar Ghaddafi's forces. He became a national symbol, yet still couldn't wear a prosthetic due to pain. His cousin Salem Bensasi -- a senior database manager for UPMC -- brought him to Pittsburgh for care. Thanks to Orthopaedic Surgery and the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute, on Oct. 11 Mohamed got back in a boat for the first time in 1½ years. He aims to compete again soon.
