Enjoy Zoe C.'s interview with Honor Kneafsey & Eva Whittaker who play the main characters Robin and Mebh in the new film, Wolfwalkers. Unique, feral and artistic, Wolfwalkers is a movie about understanding nature and life outside our pre stablished concepts.
Wolfwalkers is an animated fantasy/adventure film directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart. It is an amazing tale of loss, friendship, superstition and bravery.
The filmmakers, along with screenwriter Will Collins, are back after previously teaming up on the animated film Song of the Sea. In Wolfwalkers, like in their previous films, humans and nature intertwine in a very original way, which is one of the main ideas behind the story: the connection with and our attitude towards wildlife.
In Wolfwalkers, Robin, a hunter apprentice, and Mebh, a free-spirited girl, befriend each other despite their differences. Robin is in Ireland helping her father to extinguish the last pack of wolves. Mebh is a member of a strange tribe that has the ability to transform into wolves, and she is looking for her mother. Together Robin and Mebh will discover what humans are trying to destroy.
The film has a beautiful color palette and amazing animation drawings. During the entire movie you feel like you are watching a live collection of art. These animation drawings, combined with master storytelling, create a movie that touches the audience in different ways. This is a traditional story, with lots of Celtic references, folklore and elements of superstition. Perhaps that’s why the filmmakers decided to continue working in the glorious 2D animation format, which has largely been replaced by CGI.
The voices are stellar. Honor Kneafsey plays Robin. She has an impressive filmography, and this is her first animated movie. Eva Whittaker plays Mebh in her big screen debut in a leading role.
The music was created by director Moore's frequent collaborators, Bruno Coulais and folk group Kila. The beautiful songs are by Aurora, a Norwegian singer-songwriter that perfectly captures the spirit of the film and re-released a version of her song, “Running with the Wolves” using medieval instruments.
The message of this film is that we have to rethink the way we interact with nature. This is a kind reminder to be eco-friendly and remember that we coexist in a world of nature that needs our attention and affection.
I give Wolfwakers 5 out of 5 stars, and this is definitely a strong contender in the upcoming awards season. I recommend this film for kids 4 to 18, plus adults. Wolfwalkers debuts December 11, 2020 on AppleTV+.
