Описание: For more than two centuries, the Roman Limes marked the northern boundary of the empire in Germania. Construction began in the late 1st century AD, under emperors such as Domitian and Trajan, and expanded throughout the 2nd century AD under Hadrian and Antoninus Pius. Far from being a single wall, the Limes was a complex frontier system of forts, watchtowers, roads, and civilian settlements designed to monitor movement, control trade, and project Roman authority into contested territory.

This documentary explores how life unfolded along this frontier as pressure from Germanic tribes increased. During the 3rd century AD, a period marked by internal crises, rapid changes of emperors, and economic strain, the Limes grew increasingly vulnerable. Raids intensified after around 230 AD, and by 260 AD, large sections of the Germanic Limes were abandoned as Roman forces withdrew to more defensible positions. Through archaeology and historical sources, the film reveals how Rome’s frontier defenses worked, why they ultimately failed, and what the collapse of the Limes reveals about the weakening of imperial power.
