Описание: On April 14, 1994, seven tobacco executives told Congress under oath that they did not believe nicotine was addictive. But 31 years earlier, a confidential industry memorandum had already declared: “We are, then, in the business of selling nicotine, an addictive drug.”

Nicotine occurs naturally in the tobacco plant. So how did a hand-rolled agricultural product become one of the deadliest mass-market products ever sold, and how was the modern cigarette engineered to deliver its addictive chemical so efficiently?

This documentary follows the forensic history of the cigarette: the Bonsack machine that made mass production possible, filter ventilation that produced deceptively low machine readings, the disputed role of ammonia chemistry, and the internal documents that exposed what the tobacco industry understood about nicotine.

The story culminates in the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement and the 2006 federal judgment that found major tobacco companies liable under civil racketeering law for a decades-long scheme to deceive the public.
