Monty was a middle aged man with learning difficulties in the Forest of Dean. It is a snapshot of life in the forest in 1981 and captures the attitudes and lives of the people at the time.

I made this film in 1981. When Channel 4 came on air in 1982, I was hoping they would show it. The channel's offices were set up in Charlotte Street in London but the staff had not yet moved in, so I had leaflets printed about the film and strolled into the offices, putting a leaflet on every desk and every pin board. Unfortunately, my initiative was not appreciated, I received a copy of a memo from Jeremy Isaacs criticising security at the building. My film has never been shown, which is a shame because the very first drama on c4 was 'Walter' about a middle aged man with learning difficulties directed by Stephen Frears. A perfect accompaniment I thought.
