In 1838 Ralph Waldo Emerson accepted an invitation to address the graduating class of Harvard Divinity School and their professors. But rather than praise them he excoriated the stogy Unitarianism that was being taught. He would later call this “corpse-cold Unitarianism.” I think he would say that today’s UUism has the opposite problem: it has become dangerously feverish, and I will explore what we can learn from this in finding our way to stay true to the Principles we hold dear.
