Every big industry has moments that change everything.
For memory, one of those moments happened here in Dresden.
In 2006, researchers at one of the world’s leading DRAM makers were testing new materials for future chips. They were experimenting with hafnium oxide, a material no one thought could ever work as ferroelectric.
Then something unexpected happened.
A PhD student saw a ferroelectric effect appear in hafnium oxide. It was a discovery that surprised everyone and opened the door to a completely new kind of memory.
When Qimonda went bankrupt in 2009, the idea could easily have been lost. But NaMLab carried the research forward, proved the material’s potential, and laid the foundation for what FMC is building today.
In this video, we share how an accidental discovery became the starting point for Europe’s next opportunity in memory — and how FMC is turning it into real technology.
