Bontebok’s were the first large African mammal to be declared extinct in modern times.
Native to South Africa, they were once hunted to near extinction in the 19th century. They were declared extinct in 1799, however a Dutch farmer corralled the last 17 bontebok in a fenced in area on his property unknowingly saving them from extinction.
In 1931, the Bontebok National Park was established in the effort to conserve the species.
Today, bontebok populations are estimated to be around 2,500 to 3,000.
