Mitsubishi Materials make gas discharge tube (GDT) surge arrester.
This technology allows GDTs to have wide sparkover voltage from 140 to 7,800 volts, and works especially well against fast-rising spikes like those of a static shock or the induced voltage on a line after a lightning strike.
There is a slight difference between the two words a surge arrester and a surge absorber, but I'll be using them interchangeably.
