Nocton – “Farm of the Sheep”

Here we go again then folks in North Kesteven, and this week we’re in Nocton. Originally called “Nochetune” in the Domesday Book, its name derives from the Old English for the “farm of the sheep”. This is a typical estate village if ever there was one! Over the centuries, the Nocton estate passed through numerous owners before the Hobart family came here in the mid 19th century. One of them, Robert, was the Secretary of State for the Colonies and its thanks to him that the city of Hobart on the Australian island of Tasmania is so named.

The hall eventually came into the ownership of the Earls of Ripon. The 1st Earl was at one time the prime minister – but only for five months! They would rebuild the hall but it burned down in 1841 and its replacement suffered the same fate in 2004, leaving it an empty roofless shell – which it still is today.

The hall has a big connection to the RAF. For many years it served as a hospital, and although off limits, the buildings associated with it can still be seen. Nocton is also famous for its railway system - the NELR or the Potato Railway. Although it ceased operation in the 1960s, the NELR was the biggest of its kind anywhere in the country, transporting the good old Lincolnshire spud and their pickers.
