April 11, 2017- Ten years ago this April, the Virginia Tech shooting left colleges and universities in shock and disbelief, wondering how best to put procedures and systems in place to protect their campuses. Since that time, many institutions have thoughtfully composed critical incident response networks, often called “care teams,” to address student issues and behaviors that create concern in the campus community.
As colleges and universities formed care teams during this period, experts emphasized the value of bringing together individuals from across organizational boundaries on campus—sometimes spanning academic and student affairs—so that team members could share knowledge, information, and resources to better support student success and to better “connect the dots” in assessing the risk of violence. Care teams took on a variety of structures and functionalities across institutions, depending on the perceived needs of the institution and its students, faculty, and staff.
Please join us 12:00-1:00 p.m. EST on April 11, 2017, to hear a distinguished panel of student affairs leaders explore the question of what has changed in these ten years – both societally and technologically – and the implications of those changes for defining and creating “best practices” in the current landscape of care teams in higher education today. Jennifer N. Buchanan, Associate Vice President for Faculty Development and Advancement at Florida State University, will moderate this panel discussion as John Davenport (Illinois State University), Jackie McHargue (University of North Carolina, Ashville), Jen Day Shaw (University of Florida), and Gene Zdziarski (DePaul University) join us in a wide-ranging conversation that should encourage leaders and members of campus care teams to consider how to best adapt to today’s “ten-years-post-Virginia Tech” environment.
This webinar was co-sponsored by the ACPA Commission for Academic Affairs and Commission for Counseling and Psychological Services.
