In the face of so much violence and partition, what was India's response to the refugees? And why was it so difficult? In this video, we'll tell the story of the Indian-born refugees feeling the pain of the unending split. Meet Mr. Ved Prakash Chawla born on 15 July 1935. He was born in Baghwanpura Located in Lahore. As he begins sharing his story he tells us that he remembers the place because of Shalimar Bagh
As a child, he used to enjoy their play, sleep on the grass, and whatnot.
Till the end of 1946, there was no problem they could visit any place, and there were no religious restrictions and issues. They had no worries, everything was going great, and there was peace between Hindus and Muslims.
The year 1947 marked the end of the British Raj in South Asia and the formation of modern India, Pakistan, and (since 1971) Bangladesh, via the Partition of Punjab and Bengal, a globally disruptive event that created one of the largest mass refugee crises of the last century.
In this partition, India was formed mostly of Hindu regions, while Pakistan was mostly of Muslim areas. What was the impact? The partition of India forced millions of people to leave their homes to move to the other state. This was the largest forced migration of people that has ever happened, which wasn't because of war or famine.
He tells us his story of survival and suffering and how he got through it all.
This time of fear, rage, and turmoil between the two religions that only Refugees Could Feel.
Listen to the unheard story of 1947 by Mr. Ved Prakash Chawla himself a refugee.
