Visiting NYC/Brooklyn? Need an inexpensive date night to remember? Holiday photo ops? The Dyker Heights Christmas lights displays are the perfect way to get into the holiday season and the best part!? It’s totally FREE!

This area of Dyker Heights have become very popular over the years and not just with locals. It has its own Google Maps pin location! The holiday displays start going up after Thanksgiving. But some will already have their lights up ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend. This area does get quite busy during peak evening hours as you get closer to Christmas.

We find the best way to get to this area is by subway, taking the D train to 79th Street Station in Brooklyn. Alternatively, you can also take the R train to 86th Street Station, but we find the walk from 79th Street will make it easier to cover more ground if you’d like stroll around 79th- 82nd Streets between 10th and 13th Avenues. You can also drive to the area, but street parking availability may be difficult to come by since it is a residential area and not to mention the congestion in the area during peak times.

Some things to keep in mind…

» This is a residential area, so bathrooms are not easily accessible. There are restaurants and shops along 13th Avenue, however, do be mindful of closing times.
» Best to arrive in the area around 5pm right when it begins to get dark for slightly lighter crowds.
» You’ll have a few hours, but don’t think coming real late would to beat crowds as homes typically start turning off their light displays around 10pm.
» And lastly, make sure you’re nicely bundled because you’ll be out for a bit. The walk from the train station is about 15 minutes, and add another 20-25 minutes for the core area, then another 15 back to the station.
