This video demonstrates the emulation of the Donkey Kong handheld game made by Coleco. This was an officially licensed product and you can see a commercial for it on YouTube ( • Coleco Mini-Arcade 1982 handheld game comm... )
The work here was originally done for MESS by hap, Kevin Horton and Olivier Galibert, but as of 0.162 the MAME and MESS projects have been combined.
The game comes from a period before actual screens were used for handheld games so the game works by lighting up various pieces of art and therefore needs an artwork file to function in emulation. ( the artwork file is cdkong.zip on http://dspnet.fr/~galibert/artwork/ ) The game also used an MCU rather than regular ROM chips so extensive work was required to extract the program code in order to emulate this.
Most deaths in the video are caused by me being impatient, and pressing controls for too long causing my character to attempt to move off the sides which is fatal just like on the arcade original.
