A car bomb in the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus has killed at least 16 members of the country's security forces, according to a British-based monitoring group.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the device was detonated by a suicide bomber from the Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.

Syrian state TV reported the blast, saying several had been killed in what it described as a "terrorist bombing".

Activists have said the bomb was targeting a checkpoint and rebels are battling to take another one nearby.

It is understood that Syrian fighter jets have retaliated the car bombing, striking nearby opposition held areas.

More than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria's two-and-a-half year-long conflict.

International efforts to stop the bloodshed have stuttered for months. Russia and the US are now planning to hold peace talks in Geneva next month.
