"Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have made a groundbreaking discovery, developing a laser-based system that can read letters as small as 3 millimeters wide from a distance of 1.36 kilometers. This innovative technology utilizes Active Intensity Interferometry and quantum physics, making it 14 times more capable than regular telescopes. With potential applications in both astronomy and ground-level uses, the system is poised to revolutionize various fields. Furthermore, plans are underway to integrate Artificial Intelligence to enhance image recognition and analysis, taking this technology to the next level."
Read 3 mm fine writing from 1.36 km away
Beijing: When quantum physics and laser technology come together, sight is no longer limited to just seeing, it starts 'peeking into the future'. Now imagine a device like your mobile phone reading letters just 3 mm wide written on an object located kilometers away, without a traditional lens or camera! Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have developed a laser-based system that recorded extremely minute details of objects even 1.36 km away.
It does not take a direct picture like normal cameras, but uses the 'Active Intensity Interferometry' technique to understand how light bounces back after hitting a surface; this is a pure quantum effect that cannot be explained by normal physics.
Researchers are now planning to incorporate AI into the system to further improve image recognition and analysis. Also, the control of laser beams is being made more precise and accurate.
This system is 14 times faster
This instrument sends 8 infrared laser beams to a distant target. Then two telescopes capture the intensity of the returned light. A powerful computer compares both of these and creates an ultra-high resolution image.
This technology can keep an eye not only on a shining star but also on things like roads, buildings or simple text, meaning it can be revolutionary not just for astronomy but also for ground level needs.
The system was able to clearly read letters as small as 3mm, which is finer than the tip of a pencil. In comparison, a regular telescope can only detect objects up to 42mm from this distance, meaning this technology is 14 times more capable.
Not just for wires, it is also effective on the ground
However, there are some limitations as the target needs to be in direct sight and illuminated by the laser light. Hence, its role in covert surveillance or hidden espionage is limited.
