As one of the world’s largest plastic polluters, Indonesia is playing an active role in global efforts to tackle plastic waste. One local cement maker, Solusi Bangun Indonesia (SBI), is ramping up the use of refuse-derived fuel (RDF), which comes from plastic waste taken from the country’s landfills. Multinationals have been promoting the use of this new alternative power source as a win-win solution to tackle plastic waste and lower industrial emissions. But environmental groups say RDF production merely swaps one dirty fuel for another.
