Japanese pair figure skating Olympic champions Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara credited their gold medal at the Milan Cortina Games to perseverance and a shift in their partnership dynamic.
"As it has been said that this time I was the big sister within our pair," Miura said. "But for the past seven years? It was Kihara who led the way. He steadied the ship. He carried us through every competition... Maybe that's why, this time around, I found myself on the supporting side. The roles simply… turned."
The pair, who teamed up in 2019 and train in Canada, rallied from fifth place after the short program, posting a world-record 158.13 points in the free skate to finish with 231.24 total.
They also helped Japan win silver in the team event.
On whether they'll continue skating together toward the next Olympics, Kihara said they haven't had time to decide.
"To be honest, since the end of the Olympics, we haven't really had any time to talk directly amongst the two of us or even think about this, individually, or personally as well," he said. "So we haven't really had the opportunity even to think about what's next."
