Spotted Hyena | South Africa | Kruger National Park
When you think of hyenas, what springs to mind? In every wildlife documentary I’ve ever seen hyena’s are always portrayed as the bad guys! They are fascinating creatures, fierce protectors of their young, devoted mothers, and so much more than what we’ve been lead to believe.
In today’s video we celebrate the Spotted Hyena | South Africa | Kruger National Park showcasing them in their natural habitat, on a kill and with their cubs.
Of our planet’s three different species of hyena (the spotted, brown and striped hyena), the spotted hyena is the largest and most common. They have an unusual appearance due to their long powerful neck, uneven leg length (front legs are longer), and short thick yellow-grey fur which is covered in a spot pattern. They are more closely related to cats than dogs!
Spotted hyenas are famed scavengers and often dine on the leftovers of other predators. But these hardy beasts are also super skilled predators and will take down animals much larger than themselves. In fact, they hunt and kill most of their food. They also kill and eat birds, lizards, snakes, and insects.
Spotted hyenas often hunt in groups and can take down big animals such as wildebeest, antelope, zebras and young hippos. Smaller snacks on their menu include birds, fish, snakes, lizards and insects, too.
Spotted hyenas are social mammals and live in structured groups, called clans, of up to 80 individuals. There’s a strict hierarchy, where females rank higher than males, and the group is led by one powerful alpha female.
A Female hyena gives birth to one or two cubs a year, which are black in color when they are born. They will begin to get their brown coats and spots when they are 2-3 months of age.
Spotted hyenas are also known as laughing hyenas because of the sounds they use to communicate with each other.
