Meet Columba Jazmín López Gutiérrez, Director General of the Comision of Natural Resources and Rural Development of Mexico City.
During our trip to Mexico City in March 2024, in defense of biodiversity we met Director Gutierrez and were inspired by the work she’s leading to restore biodiversity around one of the world’s largest cities.
The methods she describes of ecological restoration highlight that restoring and protecting biodiversity are not a matter of only conservation, and reforestation, but of restoring natural ecosystem corridors, replanting and conserving native agrobiodiversity through living seed banks, and ecologically restoring whole ecosystems alongside communities.
She shows that the work of regenerating and protecting biodiversity is most efficient at the local scale, involving native and indigenous communities through placing importance on local food culture, local agroecosystems, as well as native fauna.
In the lead up to this year's Convention on Biological Diversity COP16, we hope to continue highlighting examples of biodiversity conservation and restoration that go beyond the financialization of nature.
