Alan Bern (piano) and Craig Judelman (violin) perform the piece Lyuli (viglid) at the BUGA garden show in Erfurt, Germany in July, 2021 as part of the Yiddish Summer Weimar opening concert.
This piece is attributed to Arn-Moishe Khodolenko, aka Pedotser, and was collected from the manuscripts of Avraham-Yehoshua Makonovetsky by Moshe Beregovsky in the 1930's as part of his ethnographic collecting of Yiddish music in Ukraine. This version of the piece has a lot in common with the recording by the clarinetist 'Titunshnayder', which can be heard on the compilation 'Chekov's Band', but includes a much longer introduction/development of the slower sections.
In his notes on the tune, Makonovetsky mentions that the piece depicts a cradle blowing in a storm, which explains why a piece whose title means lullaby includes many fast runs! This is a great example of the long form compositions that were an important part of late 19th century klezmer music, likely performed by the tables in honor of distinguished guests at a wedding and perhaps at concerts for the local nobles and non Jewish patrons of the more accomplished klezmorim. This performance represents a first step towards an original interpretation of the piece, which in the manuscript includes only the melody and no notes about accompaniment.
