Sunset’s Volumetric Incentive Spirometer is a device that helps you monitor and perform your own breathing exercises. Spirometers help us expand and exercise lung capacity following surgery, anesthesia or injury. With regular use in the hospital or at home, you can help prevent complications such as pneumonia and maintain optimal lung health.
Sunset’s spirometer features a mouthpiece and main unit with two chambers—one with a piston to measure volume, and a fun flow indicator to help maintain an appropriate inhalation rate. The spirometer features an adjustable target indicator that provides a guideline for lung exercise.
Let's get set up to use your Sunset spirometer for the first time. If you're at home, first clean the mouthpiece using soap and lukewarm water and dry fully with a clean cloth or paper towel. Ensure that the tubing is properly and firmly connected to the spirometer port. Set the target indicator to your desired or prescribed volume level.
Now, let's get familiar with the spirometer. You'll want to sit upright in your chair or bed, or sit at a table, and hold or stand the spirometer in an upright position with the tubing facing towards you. Exhale normally, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth and create an airtight seal. Inhale as slowly and deeply as possible. As you breathe in, you’ll see the volumetric piston rising in the large column. You’ll also see the flow indicator ball rise in the left column—try to keep it in the region with the smiley face. If the ball rises beyond or beneath the smiley face, you're breathing too fast or too slowly. Exhale normally.
Let’s complete a full exercise session. Breathe in at a moderate speed while trying to raise the volumetric piston as high as possible. Keep an eye on the flow indicator ball and keep it in the smiley face region. Once the piston is as high as you can raise it, hold your breath for 5 seconds or longer. The piston will slowly descend back down the spirometer. When it’s resting on the bottom, you can exhale slowly. Repeat this exercise 10 times, while trying to raise the piston up to the same level and monitoring the flow indicator ball. If you feel lightheaded, be sure to rest or slow down. When you’ve finished your exercise session, mark the highest point the piston reached by using the target indicator. This will be your goal next time.
Repeat these sessions four times a day or as prescribed by your doctor or provider to exercise and expand your lungs, inhaling 10 times each exercise. We recommend working the spirometer usage into your daily routine; for example, using the spirometer during TV commercial breaks. With regular use, you’ll be on your way to lung health and recovery.
