LIVE: President Trump Meets UK's Keir Starmer at Turnberry Golf Course After US-EU Trade deal | CNBC TV18
Signs of strain come when Mr Trump called the Labour mayor of London as a a “nasty person” and then speaks warmly about Nigel Farage. Sir Keir Starmer has to tread lightly but defends Sadiq Khan with a smile: “He’s a friend of mine.”
TURNBERRY, SCOTLAND - U.S President Donald Trump holds bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Trump Turnberry golf course. Visiting U.S. President Donald Trump meets and holds a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
U.S. President Donald Trump met on Monday at one of his Scottish golf courses with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who pressed him on the U.S. taking a larger role in helping quell a growing food crisis in Gaza amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in the territory.
Starmer and his wife, Victoria, arrived at Trump’s Turnberry course on the southern coast, and the Republican president spent several minutes chatting with them and proudly pointing out key aspects of the property. But the prime minister didn’t wait until they were inside to insist that Gaza would be a key topic in their meeting, calling what’s occurring there “a desperate situation.” Trump was asked if he agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks about concerns of mass starvation in Gaza being overstated and replied, “I don’t know. I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry.”
President Trump is holding talks in Scotland with Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission. European Union officials have said they believe that a deal with the United States could be reached in time to avoid the 30 percent tariffs on European imports that Mr. Trump has threatened to impose on Aug. 1. At the start of their meeting, Mr. Trump again put the odds of reaching a deal at 50/50.
President Trump revisited a sore subject in his remarks: windmills in Scotland. The president has been opposed to wind energy since long before he ran for office, because he said it upset members at his golf club.
President Trump was asked about starvation in Gaza. He says the U.S. has contributed tens of millions to help starving children in Gaza, but suggests the aid is being stolen and he hasn’t received a thank you. “People are stealing the food, they’re stealing the money, they’re stealing the money for the food, they’re stealing weapons, they’re stealing everything. It’s a mess. That whole place is a mess.”
