Thinking about some challenges my students are experiencing, and thinking about the grief I experienced in losing my mother 2 years previously, I recorded a lecture called "A Grief Observed." In this 1/2 hour talk, I talk about my own experience of grief as an entry point to C.S. Lewis' short memoir, A Grief Observed, written in the days after his wife died of cancer in 1960. I draw 7 lessons out of the text that can help us think Christianly about grief and loss.
If you check out my channel, I am usually poppy, chatty, and sarcastic in book talks, lectures, and tutorials. In this talk, I have chosen to be much more subdued as a quietly reflect on the deeply meaningful experience of grief that is such a large part of human experience.
For those that are interested, here is a reflection I used to share this talk with folks on my blog, A Pilgrim in Narnia.com, see here https://apilgriminnarnia.com/2022/02/.... You can check me out on Twitter @BrentonDana.
C.S. Lewis' A Grief Observed is out of copyright in most parts of the world outside of the US, and is available in places like Gutenberg Canada (https://gutenberg.ca/ebooks/lewiscs-a.... In printed editions, there are also thourghful forewords by folks like fantasy writer and memoirist, Madeleine L'Engle, and Lewis' stepson, Douglas Gresham. I hope to one day write a foreword myself for a new edition so that more readers can find this obscure, unusual, troubling and deeply impactful book.
