The Coffin Route is an ancient passage from Ambleside to Grasmere. Now an easy low level route between these two historic villages offering a tranquil stroll, the route was originally used to transport Ambleside's dead to the burial grounds in Grasmere, before Ambleside has its own church.
This fascinating route will take us through the grounds of Rydal Hall, then past Rydal Mount, the last home of William Wordsworth before we take a high level trail with views down to Rydal Water and Grasmere.
Once we descend towards Grasmere we encounter Wordsworth's earlier residence of Dove Cottage where he lived happily for many years before his family became to large to be accommodated here.
The Coffin Route terminates at St.Oswald's church, which is also the final resting place of Wordsworth and his family plot can be seen towards the back of the cemetery.
It is a wonderful low level walk and there is a bus between the villages should you wish to use it on your return journey.
