V osemdesiatych rokoch sa Jean‑Michel Jarre vydal na cestu, kde syntetizátory nezostávali len nástrojom, ale stávali sa samotným jazykom hudby. Skladba Arpégiateur, vydaná v roku 1981 na albume Les Concerts en Chine, predstavuje esenciu tohto obdobia – pulzujúcu, rytmicky presnú a zároveň snovú.
