When flying far out over the ocean, Airline pilots contact Air Traffic Controllers using HF USB as a means of long range communications. Pilots report their Position, Flight Level and Fuel Level, Flight Heading, Outside Air Temperature and any issues that arise during the flight. This is as close as it gets to the grass roots of aviation and communication like it had been done at the dawn of trans-oceanic flights and cross-country flights over land as well.
