In 1947, after nearly 200 years of British rule, India was finally set to become free. But freedom came with a painful question: one nation or two?
Religious tensions had grown between Hindus and Muslims. The Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, demanded a separate Muslim nation — Pakistan. The Indian National Congress, supported by Mahatma Gandhi, wanted a united India. Under pressure to leave quickly, the British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten accepted Partition.A British lawyer, Cyril Radcliffe, drew the border — the Radcliffe Line — in just five weeks.
When independence was announced on 15 August 1947, chaos followed. Over 14 million people migrated, and around one million lost their lives in riots and violence. India and Pakistan were born — but Partition remains one of history’s most painful chapters.
In 1947, India became free….but India was not united. The country was broken into 565 princely states — each ruled by a king, each with their own army, flag, and laws. If they refused to join, India would collapse before it even began. Then stepped in one man —Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. With calm words… and an iron will, Patel gave rulers a choice: Join India with honor — or face history. Most signed the Instrument of Accession. But some resisted.
Junagadh chose against its people — India answered with democracy.
Hyderabad defied the nation — India responded with Operation Polo.
Kashmir was invaded — and merged in crisis.
Junaghad king secrately discussed to join pakisthan but Lord mounbatten and sardhar vallabhbai patel not gave that oppurtunity.
In just three years, 565 states became one India.
No civil war.
No broken nation.
That is why Patel is remembered as
🇮🇳 the man who truly built India.
