Right now, companies can put almost anything in "cosmetics" - i.e. all the personal care products your family uses. They have no obligation to report injuries, and the FDA has no power to recall products that prove to be dangerous. The FDA does not receive the formulations of cosmetic products, nor do they have the legal authority to request this information. They also do they have access to company's safety data. The bill will also allow the FDA to review some of the more toxic ingredients used in cosmetics, such as formaldehyde releasers, lead acetate, and parabens.

Feel free to ask questions about the bill! It is supported by large and small companies alike, including the 3 major handmade soap and cosmetic coalitions. It is also the only cosmetics safety bill currently introduced to address animal testing in a positive way by encouraging other means of safety substantiation and sharing of data. Other bills do not require adverse event reporting, mandatory recall authority, nor give the FDA formulations. We need an update to our 1938 cosmetics laws so that what Eliana went through does not continue to happen!
