Story of Talidas Lake and How 3000 People Lost Their Homes in One Night - EP:10

Описание: Last night, we arrived at Gupis Bazar and stayed at Hotel Fairy Door for just 2000 PKR. The room was simple, but the experience was unforgettable. The temperature dropped to -10 to -12°C, making the night extremely cold, yet peaceful. Early in the morning, we went back to Gupis Bazar to meet our friend Muzamil at his shop, but to our surprise, it was closed again. After bidding farewell to Gupis Bazar, we continued toward our next destination, which was originally planned to be Chilas.

However, just 15–16 km from Gupis, we discovered a lake we had been eager to explore. On the early morning of August 22, 2025, around 3 AM, local villagers from the surrounding mountains warned that a massive landslide was heading toward the Talidas area. People rushed to safe places immediately, but tragically, most were unable to save any of their belongings. In a single moment, nearly 3000 people lost their homes. The landslide blocked the Ghizer River, causing water to accumulate over 5–6 km, with a width of 400–500 meters.

A few days later, the lake had formed completely. Its water was crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding mountains and creating a breathtaking view. The lake looked like a natural paradise, but behind this beauty was a heartbreaking reality. Families were forced to live in tents in extreme cold, unable to return to their homes. Witnessing both the stunning scenery and the struggles of the displaced people was an emotional experience — a mix of happiness for nature’s beauty and sorrow for human suffering.

After exploring Talidas Lake, we continued toward Somail Darya on the other side. This was a place where I had stayed with my friend Muzamil the previous year. Although I wanted to visit his shop, time was short, so we moved ahead. Soon, we reached the Shandur Expressway, where we had to wait about 30 minutes for the road to open. During this wait, I unexpectedly met Muzamil and his father — a joyful reunion in the middle of our journey.

We then explored some local bazaars, spent 40–45 minutes sharing meals, chatting, and saying goodbye to friends. Continuing our journey through Gilgit and Jaglot, we crossed the Raikot Bridge and finally reached Chilas. We rented a room for 1500 PKR and rested for the night. Dinner was had in Jaglot before arriving in Chilas, where we ended the day after a long but memorable journey.

This trip to Talidas Lake reminded me of the striking contrast between nature’s breathtaking beauty and its sudden, devastating power. From the dreamy lake that forms a picture-perfect scene to the harsh reality of thousands displaced, this journey was a powerful reminder of life’s unpredictability and the resilience of people facing disaster.
