The breed originated in about 1900 near Tervuren, Belgium, the city for which it is named.
Terv is closely related to the three other Belgian herding dogs – the Malinois, the Laekenois, and the Groenendael.
Farmers relied on the breed to herd and guard their stock. As farming became more mechanized,
The dogs were dispatched to other roles in military and police k9 units, search and rescue squads, and as service dogs.
It was recognized by the AKC in 1918, but nearly went extinct before World War 2.
