Pierre is well known in our area for huge air and aggressive kite loops on the water, but this time we follow him onto the frozen Barnegat Bay as he straps into a K2 snowboard and flies a 4 meter Flysurfer kite. The speed, responsiveness, and control on ice are a whole different experience compared to riding on water.
In this video we break down what water kite boarders should know before trying ice kiting, including whether you should ride a much smaller kite than normal, how to manage speed without edging like you do on water, how reactive the kite feels on ice, and what your options are for stopping, flagging, or ditching the kite if needed.
If you’re a kiteboarder looking for a way to ride through the winter, ice kiting might be worth adding to your skill set. We’re definitely excited for the bay to unfreeze, but this is a pretty solid way to stay on the wind in the meantime.
