In this video, I review, install and test a Derale transmission pan with cooling tubes on a 700R4 transmission.
Back on the Firebird project! In today’s video I’m testing out a brand-new Derale deep transmission pan to see if it really helps lower transmission temperatures compared to the cast aluminum Speedway Motors pan I had before.
The old aluminum pan had some cracks, possible leaks, and honestly didn’t perform the way I hoped. Since making other cooling upgrades (clutch fan, shroud, FlowKooler water pump), I’ve noticed my Firebird’s cooling system has been great — but transmission temps still crept higher at extended idle.
This new Derale extra capacity trans pan holds an additional 2 quarts of ATF, has built-in air-cooling tubes for airflow across the fluid, a drain plug, and comes with a composite gasket. Derale advertises up to 20–50° cooler transmission temps… so I installed it to find out if the claims are true!
👉 In this video, I’ll cover:
Side-by-side comparison of the Derale vs Speedway Motors pan
Installation details (sensor transfer, gasket seal, drain plug clearance)
First drive and extended idle test results
Real-world transmission temps after 45+ minutes of driving and idling
After testing, I can say this Derale pan dropped my Firebird’s transmission temps by at least 15–20° under normal driving and extended idle. That’s a HUGE improvement for reliability and peace of mind with a classic car.
If you’re dealing with high transmission temperatures in a first-gen Camaro or Firebird, this might be one of the best upgrades you can make.
