How to Get Around
Rent a car instead of taking the bus & stay along the highway.
Make sure to pack enough snacks and supplies for the full day. Make sure to include waterproof clothing!
Parking was pretty cheap, usually only $2 or even free at times, so that's not something you'll have to worry too much about.
Make sure to fill up your tank whenever you get the chance (especially once it hits 50%) since gas stations can be few and far between.

I recommend staying along the highway 1 instead of returning to the capital city, that way you can spend more of your time exploring the waterfalls and nature instead of going back and forth.
There are even several natural jacuzzis to use for free during your stay!

Where to Eat During Your Stay
Hot dogs at gas stations in Iceland can cost around $15 USD, so if your place comes with breakfast, make sure to fill up and take advantage of good, healthy food at an affordable price.

Yes, absolutely. I parked my car in random locations and stopped off in places off-the-beaten-path and still felt safe the entire time.
