India’s largest IT services firm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is planning to cut its workforce by 12,261 jobs, about 2% of its global headcount of 6.13 lakh, largely targeting mid-level and senior employees. This marks the biggest layoff in the history of Indian IT. TCS affiliated statements cite “skill mismatch” and shifting client demand—not AI—as primary reasons.

The Ministry of Electronics & IT has launched close monitoring of the situation, while IT unions—including FITE and NITES—have denounced the layoffs as potentially illegal, urging employees not to resign under pressure. Proposals from employee groups include notice period pay, severance benefits, extended insurance, and re-skilling assistance.

Industry figures including ex-Tech Mahindra CEO C.P. Gurnani interpret the layoffs as the end of the “Sholay era” of IT—signaling a strategic shift from headcount-driven growth to output-led, AI-driven models. Analysts warn the move could trigger attrition surges, morale decline, and broader impacts across the Indian tech ecosystem.
