Fasting and Devotion
Women, and sometimes men, observe a day-long fast; they prepare with an early morning meal before sunrise and adhere to the fast throughout the day .
Creation of Ashtimki Chitra (Wall Painting)
A unique folk art form is created on the wall of the village elder’s (Mahatawa’s) house, typically in the entrance or living room. These paintings are drawn using natural homemade colors—such as red clay (red), bean leaves (green), and burnt grass or gourd (black) .

Symbolic Imagery
The paintings depict the evolution of life and weave in Tharu folk mythology, including:

The cosmic creator Gurbaba, who brought "amarmati" (clay) from the netherworld with the help of a crab and earthworm.

The first creature: fish, along with a boat carrying Gurbaba and his disciples .
Nature and life motifs: Kadam tree (a favorite of Krishna), Krishna playing the flute, sun, moon, animals like fish, crab, tortoise, monkey, elephant, horse, camel, chicken, peacock, scorpion; figures from epics like Ravana, Pandavas, and Draupadi are also featured .


Preparation
Days before, Tharu women engage in preparations: cleaning the community space, gathering natural pigments, brushes (made from bamboo), and dressing in traditional attire and jewelry .

Fasting & Painting
On the festival day, fasting devotees gather at the elder’s home. The painting (Ashtimki Chitra) is created—traditionally by men, though today women also actively participate (especially fasting women) under guidance
Worship & Songs
As the painting is completed, women perform worship rituals, offering tika, fruits, lamps, and symbolic items. The artwork and Krishna are worshipped, with devotional songs sung through the night .
Astimki is considered a special day for Tharu women, marking devotion, creativity, and cultural expression
