Chengdu is a city known for its spicy, numbing and fragrant foods (hotpot!) and is also home to the famous giant pandas. Even though Chengdu is one of the five largest Chinese cities, it has the feels of a smaller town: Compared to other Chinese mega-cities, you immediately feel the slower, laid back tempo of life. The elderly people of Chengdu love to spend their days outside playing card games and Mahjong, while slowly sipping their favourite tea. During summer you'll hear the crickets chirping loudly in the trees, while some fishermen wait for their catch in the river.
