Earth to Boston invited Somerville’s Le Prestige to The Space for a performance of their all-instrumental, improvisational groove music. Fitting all 8 band members, their gear, and an audience of 20 in The Space was no small feat, but everyone found room to nod their heads, clap their hands, and get down. Also of note: this was just the second performance of the band featuring new guitarist Ian Ayers, who replaced our friend David Johnston after he passed away in September.

Bandleader/bassist/composer Chris Forkey originally conceived the band as a sax/trumpet/upright bass/drums quartet that would play original drum ‘n’ bass music with all-live acoustic instruments, which proved to be quite difficult… This led to the writing of grooves and melodies that reflect a myriad of influences including 60’s soul jazz, 70’s funk, disco and dub reggae, and the loops and samples of 90’s hip-hop and electronica.

Le Prestige debuted in late 2008, and the mostly acoustic ethos remained as the band expanded throughout the 2010’s, adding vibraphone and guitar. Flying comfortably “under the radar”, the band played area bars, breweries, Porchfests, Farmer’s Markets and the occasional wedding. By 2023, the band was regularly performing as an octet, with the addition of two saxes and accordion, delivering a unique, hard to classify instrumental music in a trademark loose-yet-tight way.
