FROM THE PROGRAM NOTES
The authorship of "Absalon, fili mi" is problematic. While in its few surviving sources it is attributed only to Josquin, we do not entirely know who wrote it. Some musicologists suggest that Josquin’s contemporary Pierre de la Rue may have composed it. Regardless, "Absalon, fili mi" was written and first copied sometime around the turn of the 16th century. Composed for four voices, the motet begins with a simple ascending line to which the other voices respond in imitation. There are actually two questionably authentic versions of this piece: one in the key you hear in this performance, and one a fourth higher. This low version sits exceedingly low in register, which reflects the sunken reaction of a father in mourning. This makes the cascading descent on the word "descendam" even more resigned.
