Trowbarrow Quarry Walk, Silverdale | Hidden History & Surprising Culvert Find
Join me on a fascinating walk around Trowbarrow Quarry in Silverdale, a place where rugged limestone cliffs, quiet woodland paths and wide open views hide a surprisingly deep industrial history.
Trowbarrow Quarry was once a busy limestone quarry, worked mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The stone extracted here was used for local building and agriculture, helping to shape villages across Silverdale and the surrounding Lancashire area. What now feels like a calm nature reserve was once alive with the sound of blasting, wagons and hard manual labour.
Today, the quarry has been reclaimed by nature. Sheer rock faces tower above winding footpaths, rare plants cling to the limestone, and wildlife thrives in what is now a peaceful and protected landscape within the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
During this walk, I also stumble across something unexpected — a hidden culvert tucked away in the quarry. These old stone and brick culverts were often built to control water flow through industrial sites, preventing flooding and allowing quarrying to continue. Finding one still intact is a brilliant reminder of the engineering and problem-solving that went on behind the scenes of places like Trowbarrow.
This walk isn’t just about stretching the legs — it’s about uncovering hidden history, appreciating how nature reclaims industrial scars, and discovering the small details that most people walk straight past.
If you enjoy walking, local history, hidden structures and places that tell a story, this one’s for you.
