Master guitarist and songwriter, Dick Wagner performs the song he co-wrote with the legendary Alice Cooper, "Only Women Bleed" at a book signing for his 2013 memoir, "Not OnlY Women Bleed" at Bookends bookstore in Ridgewood, NJ. in the spring of 2013.
At the time, I was researching and writing my 2015 book, "Shout It Out Loud - The Story of KISS's Destroyer and the Making of an American Icon" when I met Dick and interviewed him for the book. Wagner was a key part of the making of KISS's greatest studio album, as he plays on four tracks, including acoustic guitar on the mega-hit "Beth."
Known as one of the great axemen of his era, Wagner met Bob Ezrin while he was in the Detroit band, The Frost. The famed producer then used Dick as a fill-in guitarist on many Alice Cooper group and Aerosmith records, then in 1975 when Alice went solo, he became Cooper's band leader and co-wrote many hits with him, including ballads, like "Only Women Bleed," I Never Cry," and "You and Me."
After our interview, I ended up writing a long-form piece about Dick's stellar career of playing behind greats like Alice and Lou Reed, where his guitar work with fellow guitar-slinger, Steve Hunter created some of the finest rock music for Reed's 1973 album, "Rock and Roll Animal." Coining the nickname, "The Invisible Maestro," a moniker he loved, we remained friends until his untimely death in 2014.

Today, the Dick Wagner "Remember the Child" Fund provides fiduciary and therapeutic assistance for special needs children, a legacy that is maintained by its founder and chairman, Susan Michelson, also a dear friend I got to know in Dick's final year of life.

This intimate and straight-from-the-heart version of the tender and beautiful "Only Women Bleed," the music of which Dick had written years before he met Alice, is one of the last performances of Dick's incredible musical life. It's been on my phone since that day and I thought it was time to share it with the world. To Dick Wagner, a fine gentlemen, a brilliant musician, and a true humanitarian. I miss him dearly.
