Not early enough to seem eager, not late enough to be rude. The perfect middle ground I'd learned to navigate in a family that measured everything by appearances. My sister Victoria was already holding court at the entrance to the private dining room. She was wearing what I estimated to be four thousand dollars worth of designer labels - the dress, the shoes, the bag that she'd posted about on Instagram last week.
