On a mission to preserve heritage crafts, Jay and his team travel to Dumfries House in Scotland to meet His Majesty King Charles who set up a scheme that teaches traditional skills to young people. His Princes Foundation Craft Programme attracts students from all walks of life to learn traditional skills such as stonemasonry, thatching, blacksmithing and wood carving. Once the apprentices graduate from the course, they go on to forge careers in their chosen craft, using their much needed talents out in the real world.
A skills swap ensues: Jay and his team of expert craftspeople pledge to restore two pieces from the Dumfries House collection: an 18th century bracket clock and a piece of Wymess Wear; legendary British ceramics produced since 1822. In return, they borrow a graduate from the Princes Foundation craft programme to help back at the barn with a third repair: a fire set in the shape of a soldier that belongs to Nicola Cameron. The fireside soldier belonged to her late husband Ewan and stood guard on the hearth of the home he lovingly renovated by hand. Metal expert Dom joins forces with Dumfries House graduate Jeremy to restore the keepsake.
But Jeremy isn't the only apprentice in the Repair Shop: Steve's 21 year old son Fred has been his dad's apprentice for three years and is brought on board to help Steve restore the Dumfries House clock. Under his Dad's expert tutelage, Fred creates a new suspension for the clock while Steve focuses on stripping down and rebuilding the mechanism in the hope he can restore the clock's chime.
Meanwhile, Kirstin is tasked with consolidating the very fragile surface of the commemorative vase, reunited the two broken halves and meticulously recreating the distinctive coloured design.
Having spent time exploring the Dumfries House estate, Jay is eager to return the favour and invites His Majesty King Charles to The Repair Shop to be reunited with the items.
This very special episode of The Repair Shop is underpinned by the important mission to pass on craft skills to the next generations before they die out. They might come from very different backgrounds, but through their shared passion for heritage crafts, Jay and His Majesty save some unique national treasures and shine a light on the exciting possibilities apprenticeships offer.
