Most Snake Setups Get It Wrong — They Ignore Smell | Habitat-Driven Build

Deep in the ancient rocky ranges of Broken Hill, a small python quietly occupies a niche once held by giants. I travelled into the heart of Stimson’s Python country to walk the same gorges and escarpments these animals call home — landscapes shaped over deep time, where the first Australians shared country with enormous Matsoid snakes and where the mythology of the Rainbow Serpent was born.

What I found there became the blueprint for this build.
In the second half of this episode, I construct a fully finished, habitat-driven enclosure designed specifically for Stimson’s Pythons. From structural framing through to heating, lighting, life-support systems and olfactory enrichment, I break down every design decision and explain the biological reasoning behind it.

This build also introduces ROSS — the Reptile Olfactory Stimulation System — a method of designing for the snake’s primary sensory world: smell.
At the end, I introduce my own Stimson’s Python, Wanambi — named after the great serpent of Dreamtime — to his new enclosure.

This habitat will serve as a long-term test bed, and I’ll be sharing performance data, behavioural observations, and refinements in future episodes.
