Deep in the Florida Everglades lies a Cold War relic that shook Miami when it fired—and then vanished into the swamp.
In the 1960s, Aerojet-General built the most powerful solid-fuel rocket motor ever tested on Earth: the AJ260. Producing over 5 million pounds of thrust, this 260-inch monster was designed to prove solid fuel could power missions to the moon. But after three earth-shaking test fires—including one so powerful it damaged crops miles away—NASA chose a different path, and the program was canceled.
What remains is extraordinary: a 150-foot-deep test silo with an inert rocket motor still entombed inside, 13 miles of canals carved through alligator-infested wetlands, flame trenches, and over a dozen abandoned buildings slowly being reclaimed by nature. This 25-square-mile complex south of Homestead, Florida, stands as a time capsule of space race ambition—complete with graffiti art that tells a second history in spray paint.
Key Facts: 🚀 AJ260: Largest solid-fuel rocket motor ever built (80+ feet long, 260 inches diameter) 💥 Test SL-3 (June 17, 1967): Most powerful solid-fuel rocket test in history 🏗️ Built 1963-1964: 10 miles of roads, 13 miles of canals through the Everglades 🔥 Blast visible from Miami during test fires ⚠️ Environmental fallout led to lawsuits and program cancellation 🏚️ Abandoned since 1969, now owned by South Florida Water Management District
This is the story of engineers who battled mosquitoes, mud, and isolation to build a titan—a rocket too big to fly, and a dream too massive to erase.
