In a 6-3 decision, the Court ruled that IEEPA does not authorize the president to impose tariffs during peacetime without clear congressional approval, emphasizing that tariff authority belongs to Congress. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Brett Kavanaugh dissented. The ruling comes after lower courts found Trump had overstepped his authority, siding with businesses in multiple states that challenged the tariffs.

Reacting to the decision, Trump called certain justices “unpatriotic and disloyal,” saying he was “ashamed” of members of the Court. According to a source, he was informed of the ruling during a White House governors’ breakfast and described it as a “disgrace” before continuing his remarks.

The president has long defended tariffs as a key economic tool, previously stating they could bring in hundreds of billions of dollars, with federal data showing more than $133 billion collected as of December. The case was fast-tracked by the Supreme Court after being argued in November, leading to an earlier-than-expected decision.
