The tunnel is part of the Swiss National Road A2, which runs from Basel to Chiasso, and connects Göschenen in the canton of Uri with Airolo in the canton of Ticino. The north portal at Göschenen is at an elevation of 1080.27 meters above sea level, while the south portal at Airolo is at 1145.57 meters above sea level. The tunnel was constructed between 1970 and 1980, and it was officially opened on September 5, 1980.
